Artist Statement
This excerpt from abolitionist Sojourner Truth’s speech “Ain’t I a Woman” is an appeal for equal rights for women and African-Americans during the Civil War. Now, as the results of the American presidential election of 2016 sink in, Truth’s statement is as relevant as ever as we find ourselves questioning the future and wondering about many topics, including the protection of black and brown lives and women’s health. This piece is meant to add an uplifting vibe to the discussion, honor Truth, and her words, and create hope and promise for our shared future.
