Commissioned for $1 by the City of Chicago to celebrate the Year of Public Art, Rush More was designed by renowned Chicago artist Kerry James Marshall and executed by accomplished muralist Jeff Zimmermann and his team.
The 100×132 foot work took nine weeks to complete with production costs supported by the non-profit organization, Murals for Acceptance.
Marshall designed the piece to respond to its location. Placed on the west wall of the Chicago Cultural Center, the green “forest” balances the surrounding gray concrete and the trees swoop around the architectural constraints of the building. Focusing details on the lower half made it easier for craftspeople to paint. The subject—Chicago women who shape Chicago’s cultural landscape—is a nod to the building’s programming.
